Nuremberg

Travel Guide
Nuremberg featuring a river or creek, a bridge and heritage elements
Stroll through a city with a grand and turbulent history, where an imperial fortress overlooks visionary museums and the deep scars of World War II.

Explore the streets of Nuremberg’s Old Town (Altstadt) to find a millennium of history written on the ancient city walls. A stronghold of the Holy Roman Empire, the stunning city contains Gothic churches and medieval structures amid solemn reminders of World War II and the Nazi regime. Discover Nuremberg’s commitment to renewal by investigating its restored monuments and modern museums.

The Old Town is split into two main districts within medieval city walls. On the northern side of the Pegnitz River, find the historic district of St. Sebald in Mitte. This area contains the Main Market Square (Nürnberger Hauptmarkt), and heart of the community for many Nuremberg residents. Visit daily and seasonal markets held here and study the remarkable surrounding architecture, including the noteworthy St. Sebaldus Church and Frauenkirche. Farther north, visit the hilltop fortress of Nuremberg Castle and a museum within the former house of artist Albrecht Dürer.

South of the river, historic riverfront structures have weathered the centuries. Look for St. Lorenz Church near the charming handicraft workshops in the medieval Handwerkerhof. Try local specialties of gingerbread and roasted bratwurst, as well as Franconian wines and beers. Nearby, the New Museum houses a stunning collection of contemporary art and design from 1945 till today. Stop at the Toy Museum and the German National Museum.

Travel to the city’s southeastern corner to discover local Nazi history. Explore the enormous Reichsparteitagsgelaende rally grounds and the comprehensive exhibition, Fascination and Terror, within the Dokumentationszentrum building, a landmark example of Nazi architecture. The trials of Nazi war criminals occurred in the Nuremberg Palace of Justice and are commemorated with a permanent exhibition.

Nuremberg is located in the state of Bavaria in south-central Germany. Comprehensive rail, bus and tram networks serve the city. Explore the Old Town easily on foot. Reach Nuremberg via train to its Hauptbahnhof (Main Railway) station or its domestic airport. Get a closer look at German history and experience the rich traditions of Franconia in Nuremberg.

The Old Town of the city is beautiful, fascinating history, plenty of shopping and dining opportunities, very walkable as many streets downtown are closed to motor traffic. Excellent public transportation system.
