North Dakota

Experience the tranquility of peaceful North Dakota, a land of slow-moving rural charm, classically American wildlife and constantly friendly locals.

North Dakota proudly bears the nickname of the “Peace Garden State,” which perfectly describes the appeal of the region. Embrace the solitude and serenity of a little-seen state that is characterized by wide, open plains where you might see bison and wild horses. Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of welcoming cities before heading out into the bucolic, quiet wilderness.

The state has fascinating Native American and pioneering history. Explore an authentic American Indian settlement in Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site to learn about the earliest inhabitants of North Dakota. Follow the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail to trace the journey of the explorers heading west.

Stop in the city of Bismarck to enjoy its museums and galleries. The North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum is packed with historical exhibits charting the story of the state. Fargo, a city famed for its cinematic role, is the home of the dazzling Plains Art Museum, which displays the work of regional and American Indian artists.

Marvel at the barren beauty of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, a land where the buffalo roam. These “badlands” consist of eye-catching sandstone formations and windswept scrubland. Hike, bike or ride horses across the Maah Daah Hey Trail, which leads across plateaus, peaks and valleys.

Stroll around the floral wonderland of the International Peace Garden. This 2,300-acre (930-hectare) landscape crosses the border with Canada and is particularly beautiful in spring and summer.

The Missouri River runs through the center of the state. Ride the Lewis and Clark Riverboat for an old-fashioned journey through the heart of North Dakota. Watch for wildlife in the beautiful and remote Cross Ranch State Park.

Seasons in North Dakota are very distinct with long and cold winters leading into pretty springs. Visit in summer for festivals, outdoor musical performances and exciting July 4 celebrations. One of the best ways to explore North Dakota is by car. Drive into the state then coast along roads such as the Killdeer Mountain Four Bears Scenic Byway and the Turtle Mountain Scenic Byway.
