Kahului

The seat of Maui County is home to plentiful beaches, great weather and the amenities and convenience typical of an urbanized area.

Backed by the West Maui Mountains and next to a seemingly endless expanse of shore, Kahului, Maui is a big draw for visitors. Stroll along the shores under swaying palm trees or pay to fly over them on a helicopter tour of the island.

Like much of Hawaii, Kahului has its origins in the cultivation of sugar cane. Investigate this staple and the unique array of other Hawaiian plant life at the Maui Nui Botanical Garden in the center of town. This garden specializes in plants native to Hawaii. Relax on a calm walk through the garden while you develop knowledge of the plants you’re bound to see in the area.

Stop at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Here you will find the Schaefer International Gallery, which houses one of the island’s largest collections of publicly displayed art. Check to see whether an event is being performed at the center during your visit.

While you’re here, stop at the Aloha Friday Farmer’s Market for fresh treats. This is one of the best places in Maui for local produce and especially varieties of mushrooms, jellies and many other sweet products. On Saturday mornings, save a few hours for the Maui Swap Meet. Buy souvenirs for friends and family here, as the prices are less expensive than in other locations.

Detour to a wildlife refuge perfect for passing a sunny day, the Kanaha Wildlife Sanctuary. Spot endangered water birds including white-billed Hawaiian coot and brown koloa duck or simply take a solitary walk enjoying the saline air of the marshlands.

To get here, fly directly into Kahului Airport, the main hub of air travel for all of Maui. Rent a car at the airport to take advantage of the city. For more of an adventure, take a boat into Kahului Harbor.

Kahalui isn't exactly a destination town given the other amazing places around Maui, but it is a good place to start each day on your way to explore all of the other wonders of the island.
