Visit César Chávez Park, a picturesque green park skirting the eastern shoreline of San Francisco Park. Trails carve through the 90-acre (36-hectare) grounds, providing spectacular views of the water.
From the heart of the park spot the three bay bridges stretching across the water. As you enjoy the views, pick out sights such as Alcatraz Island and Angel Island. Stroll along nature trails and check out the range of birds and plants in the park. The Dorothy Stegmann trail wraps around the edge of the grounds, providing unobstructed vistas of the bay.
Among the park’s most intriguing features is the César Chávez Memorial Solar Calendar. Admire the intricate structure, which uses the sun to tell the date.
Enjoy snacks and drinks with your family in the designated picnic area, which has tables and a barbecue section. Gaze up at colorful kites flying in the wind above your head and watch the dogs in this popular leafy area. The Kite Festival takes place here in the final weekend of July, just a few weeks after Fourth of July celebrations.
Reach the wildlife sanctuary at the less developed area at the northern end of the park. Stay into the evening and watch the sunset paint the sky crimson. The park was named after César Chávez, a Latino American civil rights activist and leader of the farmworker movement. It is built on a former landfill.
César Chávez Park is at the northern tip of the Berkeley Marina, on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. Take the train to Berkeley Station, a short walk southeast from the park, or drive and drop off your car in the Berkeley Marina Parking. Explore the surroundings and visit some of the nearby sights, including the Adventure Playground, the McLaughlin Eastshore State Park Seashore and the Golden Gate Fields.
