Yokohama City Centre originated with a fishing village on the port of Tokyo Bay. Today, the neighborhood encompasses long-standing structures and exciting new developments in the Minato Mirai neighborhood built outward onto the bay on reclaimed land. Reflect on the centuries of development as you explore Yokohama’s waterfront city center.
The neighborhood is filled with museums to appeal to all kinds of interests. Start near Yokohama Station in Nishi Ward with visits to the Sogo Museum of Art and Hara Model Railway Museum. Nearby, the Nissan Global Headquarters Gallery features racecars and vintage models.
Minato Mirai is the newest part of the city center, filled with opportunities for fine dining, exciting night life and family attractions. Bring the kids to the hands-on Cup Noodles Museum and Cosmoworld amusement park for all-day fun. Shop at Red Brick Warehouse and get views over the whole area from Yokohama Landmark Tower Sky Garden. Tour the nearly 100-year-old four-masted Nippon Marusailing ship.
On the ground, step into more museums, including the Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan Coast Guard Museum and Japan Overseas Migration Museum. Even the walkway of Kishamichi Promenade is historic, as it was created from three bridges, part of a former railway built in 1911.
Continue south to the Naka Ward section of the city center. Dedicated museums here focus on dolls, Japan’s newspapers, Yokohama’s customs and urban history, silk and EurAsian cultures. See a baseball or American football game at Yokohama Stadium and stop for shopping or dining in Yokohama’s large Chinatown district.
Stroll along Yamashita Park’s wide waterfront boulevard to gaze back to the high-rises of Minato Mirai. Climb the Yokohama Marine Tower for additional aerial views. In the evening, attend a performance at Kanagawa Kenmin Hall or Kanagawa Arts Theatre.
Reach Yokohama City Centre via a 20-minute drive or 30-minute train ride from Tokyo International (Haneda) Airport. Walk along pleasant waterfront paths between attractions or use trains, buses or taxis to travel around.
