From sunbathing and swimming in summer to enjoying long walks and searching for marine life in tidal pools, Whitby’s coastline is great to explore year round.

Whitby Beach commands a spectacular North Sea setting backed by cliffs and framed by Whitby Harbour and a dramatic headland. This beach has Blue Flag status, which means it meets certain criteria for amenities, cleanliness and water quality. Visit Whitby Beach for a fun-filled day admiring the sea views and geological formations, splashing in the cool water and watching pretty sunsets.

The beach boasts a wide sweep of golden sand and ample space to set up camp, even on sunny days and in peak season. Dip your toes in the sea and splash around in the waves. Surfers come to ride rolling waves during times of big swells. Arrive early and stay late for the unique experience of being at one of few places on the English coast where it is possible to watch both the sunrise and sunset.

Brightly painted cabins line the beach and present a striking contrast with the stark colors of the cliffs. The cabins and deckchairs are available to rent from April to September. There’s a lifeguard service throughout the summer months.

Stretch your legs and breathe in the fresh coastal air while walking the length of the beach. A series of natural pools form at low tide. Spend time searching for crustaceans, fish and fossils.

If you are feeling energetic then walk for about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) to the pretty village of Sandsend. Follow Cleveland Way walking path over the cliff tops then drop down onto Upgang Beach and continue to the village.

Access to Whitby Beach is from Battery Parade, on the northwest side of Whitby Harbour. You can also arrive via the steps that lead down from the metered car parks located in the West Cliff district. Alternatively, take the cliff elevator, which operates between May and October. The Captain Cook Monument, Whalebone Arch and Whitby Pavilion events venue are some other town attractions nearby.
