Hampton National Historic Site showing heritage architecture and fall colors
Browse shopping malls and bookstores, stroll tree-lined boulevards, dine out at restaurants and enjoy the student nightlife at this college town in Maryland.

Towson is a lively college town that combines shopping and entertainment with outdoor recreation and scenic landscapes. The town can trace its roots back to the 18th century and its long history is celebrated in several heritage sites. Situated in the east state of Maryland, Towson is just a short drive from Baltimore.

Get an insight into Towson’s early years on a guided tour of Hampton National Historic Site. Visit the home of Charles Ridgely, who was one of Towson’s first settlers, and tour the former slave quarters. Spot colorful birdlife, gaze up at huge trees and admire manicured gardens in the site’s 63-acre (25.5-hectare) park. Go to the Fire Museum of Maryland to see displays of antique firefighting equipment and memorabilia of the U.S. fire service.

Enjoy shopping in the modern malls and independent boutiques of Towson’s central district. Find well-known retail outlets, a food court and kid’s play area at Towson Town Center. Browse for antique and vintage items in the secondhand stores on York Road. Check out the architecturally-impressive Baltimore County Courthouse, which dates back to 1854.

Go to Towson University campus to experience the lifestyle of an American college. Stroll along the tree-lined avenues and admire the colonial-style residences. See exhibitions of ceramics, textiles, prints and paintings at the campus’ Asian Arts and Culture Center. Sports enthusiasts can attend a Towson Tigers football match at the Johnny Unitas Stadium. Mix with the student community during a night of bar-hopping on York Road.

Explore Towson’s scenic beauty at the sprawling Robert E. Lee Park. Go hiking and biking on the walking trails that weave through picturesque woodland. Follow the boardwalk that borders Lake Roland and discover the park’s birdlife on free guided walks.

Towson is a popular daytrip destination 8 miles (13 kilometers) north of downtown Baltimore. Get around Towson town center on foot or using public buses and light rail. Rent a car to visit areas outside of the town. Learn about Maryland’s winemaking heritage on a tour of the award-winning Boordy Vineyards.

"The only issue we had was the sound proofing of the room. You could hear people walking and talking in the hallway all night. The street sound of cars passing by was also very noticeable."
