The four of us (retired educators) planned this trip for the last week in May to observe horseshoe crab spawning and red knots and other shorebirds. The location was ideal, being a short drive to many wildlife refuges and parks for our birdwatching excursions, and close to beaches to observe the crabs.
The house was perfect for us. It was full of light from the wall of sliding glass doors facing the Bay, and without clutter. Beds were very comfortable. Furnishings were new and contemporary, with a huge sectional sofa, ideal for viewing the flat screen tv. Kitchen was compact but it was all we needed, since we ordered take out for most dinners. Pizza and breakfast sandwiches from the neighborhood Broadkill Store were tasty, as was the ice cream. Friendly storekeeper Ed, aka "Six," and the young staff were a delight.
Suggestions: Bring a corkscrew if you are wine drinkers, as none could be found in the kitchen. (We always carry one just in case...) As stated in property description, no linens are provided, so be sure to bring bath towels, washcloths, bath mat, sheets and pillowcases, and kitchen towels. Dining table seats four, and there are two rather tipsy bar stools at the kitchen counter. We were only four so it wasn't a problem for dining and game playing, but a maximum capacity group of six will have to improvise. The kitchen has all the cookware you will need, including a seafood steamer pot and a hand mixer. We could have used more small bowls and small plates.
We loved the quiet beach and the privacy. The owner has planted (and preserved) evergreen trees and shrubs that screen one of the nearby houses, and enhance the view out to the Bay. We saw and heard numerous songbirds from the large deck, and were visited by a fox at dusk and daily by a large rabbit which munched on the plants and was unconcerned about our presence. We would stay here again without hesitation. Thanks to owner Terry for making such a special spot available to us.
