Historic Cottage on the Best Beach in the Mackinaw Area

This 1925 beach cottage was the first cottage to be built on beautiful Cecil Bay. The sand beach directly in front of it has no stones or weeds, only sand stretching over a mile in length. It faces due west, so cool breezes and full sunsets are the norm. The cottage is very well preserved for that quintessential Northern Michigan experience.

Walk out your back door down the sandy path to swim in the warm water that pools in Cecil Bay. The sand extends out two hundred yards and at 50 yards is only 2 feet deep, perfect for sandcastles and the little ones who build them.

A four minute drive puts you at the ferry dock to Mackinac Island. Wilderness State Park, the Headlands Preserve, French Farm Lake Wildlife Refuge, Fort Michilimackinac, waterparks, golfcourses and the auto-free 'Crossings' retail development are within 3 miles.

This beach has warm water blown in by the prevailing winds. It is crescent shaped and captures the warmed surface water. It is not uncommon for this water to be 10-15 degrees above that of the open lake. The prevailing winds also bring cool breezes off the lake on hot days.

The 30 foot long front porch is screened, but also has one 12 foot screen panel hinged at the top to hook the screen out of sight. This is where the hanging dual seat and a small couch are located. On most days you will not have to lower this screen because the breeze keeps bugs from entering. The porch is relatively high up from the ground (higher than what is commonly built today), so the view of the lake is improved.

Lake Huron or Lake Michigan?: Go to the local real estate office and you will find that the average lake Huron footage goes for less than $1,000

The average sales price of Lake Michigan footage on the mile of beach in the middle of Cecil Bay goes for over $4,000 per foot, when it is available.

This is because on Cecil Bay we get:

Full direct West Sunsets
Sandy beach, no weeds or stones (not even little ones close to shore), gently sloping out to five foot depth about 150 yards off shore. Perfect sandcastle area at water's edge. These are all related because the prevailing winds make the sandy beach, keep the bushes and trees from growing on the beach, cool the land, etc.
Cool prevailing wind breezes off the lake help blow bugs back into the woods
The prevailing winds and the shallowness of the two mile wide bay trap warmed surface waters

Wilderness Park Drive Really is Wild: This corner of Northern Michigan contains more public, undeveloped land than private land. Standing on the beach you can see miles of undeveloped shoreline. Emmet County's Headlands preserve is a short five minute walk down the beach. On the South side of the Cecil Bay Wilderness State Park stretches for miles into the horizon. On the other side of Wilderness Pk Dr there is the undeveloped State Forest, including French Farm Wildlife Refuge, the three mile long inland lake where the locals fish and birdwatch. Its entire shoreline remains undeveloped, but there are plenty of hiking and biking trails, along with a boat launch for fishing boats, canoes and kayaks.

But you're not really far from civilization because all the restaurants, shopping and nightlife of Mackinaw City is an easy 3 mile drive. If you haven't been to Mackinaw City in a few years you will be surprised. Of course the Mackinac Island ferry docks are there, but don't miss the historic lighthouses and fort.

Great place to stay!
We enjoyed our stay. Quiet and love the beach right out the back door! Water is clear and shallow. Perfect for our 3 year old. Home is close to Mackinaw City. The home is an older home, which we liked. It had everything we needed for our stay. Ross was very kind and answered any questions we had. We will definitely be back!

This cottage had everything we needed-a screened in porch with a swing and a great breeeze - its own little dune walk to a private beach (with a nice grill and picnic table in the shade) 4 nice chairs on the beach for sunning, napping and star gazing.!!! We had the feeling of being in our Grandmothers family cottage NO T.V was a plus!!!!

Stunning view, beautiful cottage & QUIET 🥰
If you're looking for a place to rest and rejuvenate, this is it. Every inch of this gorgeous cottage has a story to tell. The doors, windows, fireplace, floors, walls, etc. have all seen more than a century of life being lived. Leave all your negative energy behind and come sit on the porch or beach and breath in the positivity and beauty the great lake has to offer.

The location of this cottage is worth the trip, but there are nicer homes on the same beach that cost less. Yes, the cottage is old and a bit rustic, but what was so disappointing and insulting was that there was no effort made to make the stay more comfortable. The oven didn’t work, there was no propane tank for the grill, the 1950s fridge froze all of our food, the provided crockpot and the microwave were at least 30 years old and tired and small, there was no plunger for the one toilet, the heater didn’t work, and the shower stall is in the middle of a bedroom. The couches and beds looked like they were bought at garage sale and the beach chairs were torn and cracked. For the money each week’s rental brings in, there’s no excuse to not update the few creature comforts that could make a family’s stay more pleasant.

Rustic but quaint
As with the other reviews have said it is rustic but the view from the screened in porch of the bay, the closeness of the beach, how clean the beach is, and how shallow the water is makes up for the rustic nature. The cabin is old. Like older cabins the kitchen and bathroom was small, few things are updated. We dubbed the bedroom with the shower as the "shower bedroom" and there was only two couples so it was not a big deal. It was warm when we stayed but the breeze from the bay made it more than comfortable. We enjoyed being close to Mackinaw City and to ferry that goes to Mackinac Island.

View is Spectacular
This is a really old cottage. The furniture is really old, and should have been trashed decades ago. I get the “keeping it authentic” vibe, but their is a line to enjoying the space and having some modern comforts. No air conditioning so you rely on Mother Nature for a breeze off the beach. It was bearable 3 of the 4 nights, but the last night was dead calm and humid. The homes along the shore look all to be updated with modern amenities, and this is an old cottage that has served her purpose. Let her Rest In Peace.

Overall the property was great can't beat being right on the lake. Creature conforts could be updated, could stand a few upgrades but it is explained in the description of the property exactly what you are getting. However I feel the beds could be updated, everything else is perfect for the experience, overall I would recommend this property to others

Beautiful on the Bay
Cottage is in the perfect location for beach walks, swimming, hiking, biking, sunsets & stars! It seems to take you back to the early 1900s with decor and appliances (original?) from that Era. We enjoyed the authentic vibe and you will too if you don't mind the rustic comforts of yesteryear. Only minor toiletry and kitchen utensil inconveniences.

My family throughly enjoyed our time in the cottage. For being 100 years old, the building is in great shape. Ross’s communication with us before our stay was great, and David’s communication with us upon arrival was wonderful. We had a nice, relaxing time.

A very rustic cabin with charm on a truly amazing beach
My wife an I stayed here for a working vacation for a week in early October. We had a great time and would come back to this property. The location is lovely and dramatic. The beach and the region are amazing with wonderful sand, great sunsets, calm waters and close to fantastic hiking and a less than 10-minute drive to Mackinaw City for provisions or restaurant visits. The description of the property is accurate. I was raised in Northern Michigan and have been inside a lot of hunting cabins and this property is more finely appointed than just about all of those, we did feel a little bit like we were camping. That’s a vibe we were happy to roll with but it might not be for everyone. I feel like the quirks were clearly communicated in the listing, but there are probably some easy changes that would improve the appeal and charm of the place, making it feel a little more worn-in and a little less worn out. A few comments for anyone looking for clarity. It might sleep 10 but the toilet and shower situation would create conflict for most groups larger than three; there’s not a lot of space dedicated to accommodate personal hygiene. The fireplace is fantastic. Definitely bring some wood and charcoal for the grill, which is in a very pleasant spot for drinking a beer while flipping burgers. The couch is among the most uncomfortable pieces of furniture I have ever sat on and may be productively upgraded if it were replaced with three milk crates. Most or all of the outlets are vintage and can’t accommodate a plug with a grounding prong, so plan ahead if you might need adaptors for anything electronic. The internet worked well for us, but the TV did not have any web connection nor cable. If you don’t want to watch TV or are happy pulling a “Betty Boop” VHS off the media shelf, you’ll be fine. If you’d like to keep an eye on the game, bring your Roku from home. There’s probably a little more knick-knack clutter in the space than most would prefer; it would look better and would be more livable if it were thinned out considerably. The kitchen is extremely vintage—I would have lost a bet about whether or not a working fridge that old was still in use in North America—and adds some Northwoods charm, but preparing a large meal would require a little focus and dedication. A sometimes lovable sometimes sometimes shabby home on a great beach on a great lake.

Property was exactly as described. The charm of a 1920's era cottage that kept true to the theme. Rachael, the local contact, led us through the ins and outs. We had wonderful weather and Cecil Bay... breathtaking. If you have questions about what a 1920's property is.. check with the owner before you book!!

This rental is a piece of history and Ross has kept it true to its original design- it’s like stepping into a piece of history, and you won’t want to leave. Phenomenal location so close to Mackinac City yet you feel like you’re in your own little secluded dreamland on a crystal blue bay. Bring your kayaks and spend the days floating in the pristine water! I saw some reviews that put the age of the home in a negative light- look, this house is 100 years old, built before anything else in the area. It’s in amazing condition for its age. The appliances, the furniture, the decor- all of it is clean, in working order, comfortable, and awesome to look at. If you want granite counter tops and a turbo luxury shower, look elsewhere. If you want to feel like you’re on vacation in a homey, unique, and just plain beautiful vintage cabin on the lake, you can’t get much better than this!

We had such a wonderful time. We spent Most of our time on the beach building sandcastles, playing frisbee in the water, or warming up by the fire as the sun went down. It rained a half of a day one day, so we spent it playing games or reading books. You do not need to go to the dark skies park, just walk out to the beach and look up. Absolutely beautiful.

Best beach location in area
Everything he says about the beach is true. If you are looking for a place with a private house and place for kids to play right immediately in front of it in the sand this is the one you want. In early June there was some weeds that had floated in on the water but that's probably a seasonal thing and I noticed it in other areas too. It didn't stop us from using the beach though. The house is very original to it's original construction. It's amazing actually that no one over the last almost hundred years has modified it substantially. So this comes with some oddities relative to our modern perspectives you have to keep in mind. The bathroom is only 3 feet wide and it's right next to the kitchen sink. There is a shower that was added in the middle of one of the upstairs bedrooms. You just need to go in with the expectation that this isn't a modern built house. Somebody described the furniture as "an eclectic mix of some nice antiques and some second hand furniture that is pretty worn" I would agree and that there is almost too much of it, but maybe that is needed for larger groups. There are houses on each side, but we didn't see anyone around during the week fairly early in the season.

Beautiful historic cottage, but might be cold!
We loved our stay in this cute home! The only drawback is that we weren't prepared for cold weather and the house has no central heating. There was a fireplace which helped, and the owner guided us to a good place to buy firewood. There were also two space heaters, but we could only have one plugged in downstairs at a time or else the breaker would flip. In the summer months, it would have been a perfect beach getaway! The only other strange thing is that the shower is a stand-alone shower in a bedroom upstairs, completely separate from the half bath downstairs. This was not an issue at all for my wife and I, but I can imagine if you were bringing a larger family there could be some complicated logistics because of that. The owner and property manager were always just a phone call away and were very friendly and helpful!

Dissappointment
This unit definitely requires better management and upgrade. First, there was no clear instruction to access the unit and who to communicate directly. The owner or the people who look after the property not always reachable. When I get there, people clean the house were not using mask. Most of the kitchen utensils were dirty. Furniture's (beds, drawers, chairs etc.) were so old (looks like they are from trift store). House location is great to everywhere. I would rather stay at motel in town next time.

Charming Lake Cottage Get Away
My husband and I stayed here for a week in Sept. If you want that classic old lake cottage feel this is definitely it. Property is quiet and beautiful with the views and sounds of the lake. We enjoyed fires in the big stone fireplace every evening and coffee on the front porch listening to the sound of the waves every morning. Gorgeous State Park trails behind the cottage with trail head close by off the road behind the cottage. Mackinaw City, Bay Bridge and UP are close by. Local grocery store in Mackinaw city was very small but had just about everything and prices were not bad. This store had the best dry firewood and bundles were priced the same as locals selling wood. Larger grocery in St. Ignace or Cheboygen if you are going that way. Mackinaw City has plenty of touristy shopping and many good restaurant's. Because of covid we ordered take out, hiked the many local trails, toured lighthouses (they were careful to limit numbers of people at one time) and relaxed on the beach and front porch. The cottage was very clean when we arrived. We had one issue with the cottage which the property manager attended to immediately and stayed in touch with us to make sure it was resolved. We live in a 130 year old house with antiques that I use every day. This cottage is an eclectic mix of some nice antiques and some second hand furniture that is pretty worn. All of the beds were functional but the mattresses were very firm. I only found 1 of the 5 beds comfortable enough to sleep on but that's a personal preference. If you love old architecture and antiques/older furnishings this is a very charming cottage in a private, beautiful and relaxing spot. We would definitely return.

Beautiful location. Great place to sit and watch the sunset.
My only complaint. (Very slight) It would have been nice to have television to watch the news in the evening but I didn't miss it much. My wife loved the proximity to Mackinaw City. It was also a good place to walk the dogs across the street on the power line right of way. This lead to trails through the woods. Overall a very enjoyable week in Michigan
