Ischia Ponte is a neighborhood famous for the iconic Aragonese Castle, which overlooks the Gulf of Naples from a scenic clifftop. Quaint, colorful houses line the narrow, meandering streets and piazzas in a region made famous by Hollywood movies. To visit Ischia Ponte cross the bridge connecting the main island to the volcanic rock that hosts the castle.
Climb to the castle’s hilltop plateau for spectacular views of the sea and the rest of the district. Once inside, embark on a guided tour of the fortress to learn about its complex past. Its initial structure was built in the 5th century B.C., before it was sieged by the Romans, the British and the French over the centuries. Relax with beverages at the café and peruse the history books in the shop.
Back on the mainland you’ll find many historic treasures. Step inside the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta and admire its white arches and domes. Next-door, visit the Museo del Mare to learn about the history of the island. Art exhibitions and events are held in the nearby Guevara Tower, while the Scogli di Sant’Anna headland provides excellent views of the water and cliffs. Walk north to admire the yellow façade of the Chiesa di San Pietro.
At the northern end of the area lies the Ischia Porto district, which maintains the trend of brightly colored buildings and terrace bars. The two districts are separate towns that together form the area of Ischia. Enjoy the spa treatments at the Terme di Ischia or watch a concert at the Royal Palace of Ischia.
The district runs across the southeastern part of Ischia, on the eastern coastline of Ischia Island. Arrive on the islet via the Ischia ferry terminal and walk southeast for around half an hour to get here. While in the area, make sure to also explore the towns of Carta Romana, Forio and Sant’Angelo.
The castle and its rich history dominate the charming neighborhood of Ischia Ponte.
