Our hosts, Rowena and Rex, long-time Baker residents, are personable, gracious, and very friendly. They have a wealth of local knowledge and are happy to share. The trailer is within 100 feet of their home, but they fully respected our privacy.
We loved sitting on the porch watching the sunrise, having breakfast, and enjoying dinner in the evening. It was quiet and offered a relaxing view. The night skies were beautiful, and we even heard coyotes howling in the distance. We loved all the hummingbirds flitting about and deer in the orchard.
The entire place was clean, and very convenient for accessing Great Basin National Park. The beds were comfortable. The shower was nice, with plenty of hot water. The kitchen was well stocked and had several nice touches. 12 cup drip coffee pot was a nice surprise since we are coffee addicts! Air conditioning was amazing for late August (we turned the AC off when we left in the morning and returned home early evening a couple of days and the AC struggled to cool the bedrooms a bit), and a portable heater quickly warmed up a few cold mornings. WiFi is very limited, cell service (Verizon) is good.
Baker is a very small town. Most conveniences are severely limited, one high-priced gas station ($5.39/gallon), a General store, one sit down restaurant/bar, and two food trucks.
You should bring your own groceries if you plan to stay in Baker for several days. The General Store has a few supplies to supplement if needed (including fresh Avocados)!
GBNP is a beautiful rugged Park. You range from 5,000 ft (Baker) to 13,000 ft (Wheeler peak) in elevation and various climates in between. It was 20+ degrees cooler at the Wheeler campground than in Baker. Everyone at the park, from Rangers to Maintenance staff, to the Cafe staff at Lehman caves were amazingly friendly & helpful! This is the best maintained NP that we've visited!
The Lehman Caves tour & the Astronomy program are "must-do" items at GBNP!
Overall, we considered the place as having a quaint vintage vibe and perfect for the two of us. If you're planning a trip to Baker, this is a great place to stay!
