Fed by warm crystalline spring water, the Antique Pool (also known as Cleopatra Pool) has been attracting visitors since Roman times. Bring your swimsuit, submerge yourself in the pool and feel the rejuvenating properties of the medicinal water. Delight in the unique opportunity to rest on ancient temple ruins and experience the calm ambiance from a café.
Legend states that Marc Antony created the pool for Cleopatra, who relaxed in the same spring waters that feed it today. Imagine a time when an ornate Roman temple dedicated to Apollo, the god of sun, light and healing, surrounded the complex. Following an earthquake in the 7th century, the temple’s Doric columns crashed into the water and formed an intriguing archeaological ruin. Swim between fragments of valuable Roman artifacts and pose for photos while sitting and standing on columns.
Steps, handrails and safety ropes provide easy access to the water, which maintains a temperature of around 97 F (36 C). Get changed in the on-site changing rooms and leave your belongings in the lockers while you swim. Look for the water pump, from where you can drink the medicinal water for free and fill up bottles.
Take time out from bathing and purchase drinks, light meals and snacks at the complex’s two cafés. Outdoor seating areas have views over the pools and lush green gardens. Both swimmers and non-swimmers are welcome to experience the facilities of this ancient spa.
Located in the ruined Roman city of Hierapolis, the pool is less than a 15-minute drive from central Pamukkale. Other attractions nearby are the Hierapolis Archaeology Museum and Hierapolis Theatre.
The Antique Pool is open daily and there’s an admission fee. Discounts are available for children and non-swimmers can enter free of charge. Remember to bring a towel or purchase a souvenir one from the shop.
